Just before Songkran in April 2018, a select few students, from Regents International School Pattaya, took part in the fieldwork part of their marine research and conservation training in collaboration with the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program.
This field element involved visiting the trash pile at Koh Tao to understand the impacts of tourism, putting their months of turtle ID training to work by surveying for turtles at the island, and culminating in a rare chance to participate in groundbreaking research efforts on marine microplastic pollution by Save The Plastic.
This pilot initiative in training students in introductory skills of marine research and conservation will hopefully set the groundwork for future efforts of a similar sort.
